Biology - Year 9 - Organisation Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function working together (e.g. muscular tissue)
What is an organ?
An organ is a collection of tissues, all working together to perform a specific function (e.g. the stomach)
What is vascular tissue?
Tissue that contains blood vessels
Name the 3 types of tissue found in the stomach and their uses.
- muscular tissue: to churn the food and digestive juices of the stomach together.
- glandular tissue: produces the digestive enzymes like pepsin that break down food, HCl and mucus.
- epithelial tissue: covers the inside and outside of the organ and contains blood vessels.
What is the function of the liver?
Produces alkaline bile that emulsifies fat so it can be digested and neutralises HCl in the stomach.
What is the function of the stomach?
The muscular walls churn food, breaking it down, produces pepsin (protease enzyme) and HCl, which gives the right pH for pepsin to work.
What is the function of the pancreas?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase, releasing them into the small intestine.
What is the function of the small intestine?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase to fully digest food, also is where the soluble food molecules are absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood.
What is the function of the large intestine?
Excess water is absorbed and faeces are produced
What is the function of the salivary glands?
Produce amylase in saliva which helps break down food
What is digestion?
Breaking down food to smaller soluble molecules so it can pass through the wall of the small intestine
What is absorption?
How is the small intestine adapted for its function?
What is the role of the gallbladder?
Stores bile before releasing it into the small intestine
