Biology Y11 U1 T2 Flashcards
What is a zygote?
Fertilised egg
Why is a Zygote totipotent?
it has the capacity to differentiate into any cell type
What is cell differentiation?
The process during which young, immature (unspecialised) cells take on individual characteristics and reach their mature (specialised) form and function.
Levels of Organisation
- Chemical & Molecules
- Organelle
- Cells
- Tissue
- Organ
- System
- Organism
Fick’s Law
Rate of Diffusion = SA x difference in conc. / thickness of exchange surface
What is needed for efficient Gas Exchange?
Large SA, moist surface, thin surface, large concentration difference
What are Enzymes?
proteins (biological catalysts) that break down a specific substrate
What is a Monomer?
smallest unit, includes: glucose, fructose, galactose (monosaccharides)
What is a Dimer?
made of 2 units, includes: maltose, lactose, sucrose, these get broken down into monosaccharides
What are the two types of digestion?
Mechanical and Chemical
Mechanical Digestion
break down food into smaller parts, takes place in the mouth, start of carbohydrate chemical digestion
Chemical Digestion
break down of nutrients into smaller parts using “chemicals”/enzymes to break down chemical bonds
What is Saliva?
lubricates “bolus” (blob of food)
