Biology Term 3 2024 Test Flashcards
What organelle is only in a plant cell and what it it’s function?
Chloroplasts, which absorb sunlight to be turned into energy and food. They contain chlorophyll which is what makes plant green
Name the part of a cell where a plant cell manufactures it’s food
The mitochonria
What types of cells have a cell wall?
Plant and fungal cells - cell wall is used when the structure does not have bones
What does a muscle cell do?
There are three kinds - volentary/sketal muscles attach to your skelaton, involentary/smooth muscles that work with thinking, cardiac muscles that use no engergy and function by themselves.
What does a nerve cell do?
What make up the brain and carry messages of functions for the body to perform through axons over long distances.
What does a fat cell do?
There are two types of fat cells. Brown which are used for heat and insulation and white which stores energy.
What do red blood cells do?
One of the two types of blood cells. Red carries oxygen and waste from your body. (White is part of the immune system - fight against infections.)
What is the organelle that stores all DNA and runs the cell?
Nucleus
What part of the cell makes food?
Mitochondrion
What organelle in a plant cell is used instead of bones?
Cell wall, which in the very outer of the cell, encasing the membrane
What does the vacuole do?
Stores water and waste before it gets removed from the cell
What substance are all of the organelles in a cell contained in?
Cytoplasm
What does the rough endoplasmic reticulum do?
It is associated with protein synthesis such as folding, sorting and post translational modifications.
What does the smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?
It is involved with the synthesis of lipids, steroids and carbohydrates.
What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction requires two different sex cells, one from the female reproductive system and one from the male, making the offspring genetically different from the parents. Asexual reproduction only requires one parent and the offspring is then identical to the parent.
