Biology techniques Flashcards
Gel Electrophoresis
Dividing DNA, RNA, and proteins by size and charge.
Native PAIGE
Will separate molecules by size to charge ratio.
SDS PAIGE
Separates proteins by solely by mass only.
Reducing SDS-PAGE
is the same as SDS- PAIGE just with a reducing substance present, this will completely denature the protein even with disulfide bonds.
Isoelectric focusing
Protiens move in a gel based off of charge until they reach the PI point (no more net charge)
Western Blotting
first separating proteins by size, then detecting the presence of a specific protien using radiolabled antibodies.
Northern blotting
Detection of specific RNA strands
Southern Blotting
Detection of Specific DNA strands
DNA Sequencing (Sanger dideoxynucleotide sequencing)
Used to determine sequence of nucleotides in a strand of DNA.
Simple Distillation
Separates two molecules with boiling point differences of 25 degrees or higher.
fractional distillation
separates two molecules when boiling point is smaller than 25 degrees celsius.
vacuum distillation
separating two molecules with two high boiling points and they risk changing conformations.
Polymerase chain reaction
Amplifies quantities of small DNA by large amounts.
Mass specrometry
Helps determine mass of particular compound and molecular structure
ELISA
Determines the concentration of a molecule of interest in a given sample.
