Biology Section 3 ( and Cancer) Flashcards
What is a communicable disease?
A disease caused by a pathogen
Give 3 examples of communicable diseases:
- Measles
- Covid 19
- Malaria
Give 3 examples of non-communicable diseases:
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Lung Disease
Define the term; communicable
A disease that can spread from one organism to another
Define the term; non-communicable
A disease that is not passed from one organism to another
What is a risk factor?
Something that increases the likelihood of developing a disease is called a risk factor
What is the difference between a malignant and a benign tumour?
Malignant - they are cancers, they spread to other parts of the body and cause harm
Benign - cell growth that do not spread to other parts of the body
What is cancer?
Cancer is the result of changes in cells that lead to uncontrolled growth and division.
How do tumours form?
Cells should die when they grow old. Mutations can stop cells dying, causing them to keep dividing without dying
Describe how a tumour may spread to other parts of the body
Via the blood
What is a microorganism?
Microorganisms are tiny living organisms which can be viewed under the microscope.
Name the main microorganisms
The 4 main microorganisms are bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists.
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that can cause disease
What is the difference between a pandemic and an epidemic
Pandemic - an epidemic that spreads through human populations over a wide region
Epidemic - when the incidence rate of a certain disease exceeds what is expected based on recent experience
Describe 3 ways in which pathogens are transmitted
Water, Air, Vector, Direct Contact
