biology parts of a flower Flashcards
Sepal
The sepals are the outermost part of the flower and are usually green in color. They protect the flower bud before it opens and also support the petals once the flower is fully open.
Petal
The petals are the colorful, often fragrant part of the flower that is designed to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and birds. The number and shape of petals can vary widely among different species of flowers.
Stamen
The stamen is the male reproductive organ of the flower. It consists of a filament and an anther.
Anther
The anther is the part of the stamen, the male reproductive organ of a flower, that produces and releases pollen.
Filament
The filament is a long, thin, stalk-like structure that supports the anther of the stamen, which is the male reproductive organ of a flower. The filament is responsible for holding the anther in place so that it can release pollen for fertilization.
Pistil/Carpel
The pistil (also known as the carpel) is the female reproductive organ of the flower. It is composed of three parts: the stigma, style, and ovary.
Stigma
The stigma is the sticky, often bulbous structure at the top of the pistil that receives pollen during pollination.
Style
The style is the long, slender part of the pistil that connects the stigma to the ovary.
Ovary
The ovary is the part of the pistil that contains one or more ovules, which are structures that develop into seeds after fertilization.
Ovule
The ovule is the structure within the ovary that develops into a seed after fertilization.
