biology part of plant leaf Flashcards
Xylem
Xylem is the tissue responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plan
(water & minerals from roots)
Phloem
Phloem is responsible for transporting organic compounds, such as sugars, from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Epidermis
The epidermis is the outermost layer of cells in plants, which covers the entire surface of the plant and serves as a protective barrier
Palisade Cells
Located between the upper and lower epidermis. They contain many chloroplasts, which are responsible for photosynthesis
Spongey Mesophyll
loosely arranged tissue of irregularly shaped cells with many air spaces in between. These air spaces allow for efficient gas exchange between the leaf and the environment.
(Gas exchange, Airspace)
Upper Epidermis
The upper epidermis is typically thicker and rigid. Covered by a waxy cuticle to reduce water loss.
(Waxy Cuticle, Thick)
Lower Epidermis
Stomata, which are pores that regulate gas exchange, are typically found on the lower epidermis. Also has an Waxy Cuticle
Photosynthesis
CO2+H2O → C6H12O6+O2
Respiration
C6H12O6+O2 → CO2+H2O
Combustion
CH4+O2 → CO2+H2O
Consumer
An organism that obtains energy by feeding on organic matter
Producer
An organism that converts simple inorganic matter (such as water and
carbon dioxide) into organic matter (such as sugar and protein).
Most plants use the energy of the Sun to create organic matter from carbon
Predator
An animal that kills and eats other animals
Prey
An animal that is killed and eaten by other animals
Equilibrium
A stable situation in which opposing forces are balanced.
SO If an ecosystem is in equilibrium, the population of each organism will not change much from year to year.
