Biology Paper 1: Infectious Diseases Flashcards
What is the first stage of testing? And what is it?
.Preclinical testing
.tested on cells tissues and live animals to check for side effects
What is the second stage of testing?and what is it?
.clinical testing
.low dosage carried out on healthy human volunteers to check the drug is safe and to find the optimal dose
What is a placebo?
A fake drug
What is a double-blind trial? And why is it done?
.Neither the patient nor doctor know which drug is real or a placebo
.to stop bias
What is a communicable disease? And give an example.
.A disease that can be spread from person to person and are spread by bacteria or viruses
.measles
What is a non communicable disease? And give an example.
.A disease that cannot be spread from person to person
.coronary heart disease
What is health?
The state of physical and mental well-being
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes disease
What are the 4 types of pathogens?
Bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists
How do bacteria make us ill?
They reproduce inside our bodies very rapidly and produce toxins which damage our cells and tissues
How do viruses make us feel ill?
Live and reproduce inside our cells and tissues then burst out of them causing cell damage
How do pathogens spread?
.in the air
.water
.direct contact
How do we prevent the spread of pathogens?
.washing hands
.providing clean drinking water
.reducing direct contact (eg using condoms
.self isolation
.vaccination
