BIOLOGY-Organism and their envoiment Flashcards
Define Ecology?
The study of the interaction between living organisms and their environment
Define Population?
A group of organisms of one spices, living in the same area in the same time.
Define Ecosysystem?
A unit containing all of the organisms and their environment, interacting together, in given area.
Define Community?
All of the population of different spices in an ecosystem.
Define Food Chain?
A diagram showing a flow of energy from one organism to the next beginning with a producer.
Define Food Web?
A network of interconnected food chains.
Define Producer?
An organism that makes its own organic nutrients, usually using energy from sunlight, though photosynthesis.
Define Consumer?
An organism that gets its energy by feeding on other animals.
Define Herbivore?
An organism that gets its energy by eating plants.
Define Carnivore?
An organism that gets its energy by eating other animals.
Define Tropical Level?
The position of an organism in a food chain, food web or pyramid of biomass or pyramid of number.
Define Decomposer?
An organism that gets its energy from dead or late organic matter.
Where does all the energy in living organisms originate from?
Almost all of the energy in organism on Earth originate from the Sun.
Why are green Plants called Produces?
Because in photosynthesis, they use energy from sunlight to produce the food that then powers the rest of the food chain.
Why are there rarely more than five links in a food chain?
The further up the food chain you go, the less energy is available from the original energy provided by the sun.
This is because at each trophic level, the organism use up a lot of the energy as they live and grow, so there is less available to pass on to animals that eat them.
