Biology of Oxygen Flashcards
Where are oxygen levels sensed?
Carotid Bodies
What are 4 physiological responses in acute hypoxia?
- increase breathing rate
- Constrict vessels
- Increase HR
- Dilate peripheral blood vessels
What is the main nerve responsible for taking signal from carotid body to CNS?
Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
What are the 3 components of the carotid body?
Nerve fibre, type 1 cells, type 2 cells
What type of cell is the type 1 cell?
Glomus cells - sense O2 and CO2, excitable
What type of cells are type 2 cells?
Glial like, non-excitable
What happens in the glomus cells in low PO2?
Low PO2 - K+ channels close - cell depolarizes - VG Ca2+ channels open - Ca2+ entry - degranulation of DA vesicles - DA sends signal to glossopharyngeal nerve - medullary centre increases respiratory rate
