Ectothermic organism
An organism that cannot control its internal body temperature. (Cold-blooded)
Hermaphroditic
A situation in which a single individual can produce both male and female gametes.
Metamorphosis
A development stage where an immature organism goes through extensive changes in body plan to enter an adult stage.
Bilateral symmetry
Capable of being divided into two halves that are mirror images of each other.
Radial symmetry
Symmetry that arises from a central axis.
Open circulatory system
A system in which blood is not confined to blood vessels but is pumped into the cavity to have direct contact with the organs.
External fertilization
Fertilization that occurs outside the parents’ bodies.
Internal fertilization
Fertilization that occurs inside one of the parents’ bodies.
Closed circulatory system
A system in which blood is confined to blood vessels.
Molting
The shedding and replacing of an old outer covering.
Compound eye
An eye that is made up of many small viewing units, each of which produces an image
Simple eye
An eye that is made up of one lens which produces one image.
Pollinator
An animal that carries pollen from one plant to another to aid in fertilization.
