Biology Module 8 Flashcards
Supergroup
The classification category that is lower than domain and higher than kingdom.
Cytokysis
The bursting of a cell due to a rupture in its plasma membrane.
Plasmolysis
The shrinking of a cell’s cytoplasm due to water loss.
Diatoms
Unicellular stramenophiles with a cell wall made of silica.
Dinoflagellates
Unicellular alveolates with a cell wall made of cellulose.
Pseudopod
An extension of cytoplasm used by some cells to move or feed.
Alternation of generations
Reproduction involving two phases (generations) where haploid spores grow into a gametophyte that produce gametes. The gametes combine to form a diploid sporophyte, which produces haploid spores to complete the cycle.
Plasmodium
An aggregate of diploid cell that have multiple nuclei.
Mycology
The study of fungi.
Vegetative structures
Groups of cells that are involved in metabolic activity and growth.
Mold
Multicellular fungal structure that contain many hyphae that extend away from the mycelium.
Fleshy fungus
Multicellular fungal structure made of many hyphae that are compact and form a thallus body.
Saprotrophs
Organisms that obtain nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter.
Ascocarp
A bowl-shaped fruiting body that contains the sexual spores produced via meiosis.
Pasteurization
A heating process that reduces the level of microbes in a liquid to a safe level for consumption and storage.
Basidiocarp
The fruiting body of club fungi that appears as a mushroom.
Hallucinogen
A chemical that causes alteration in the perception of reality, making someone sense that what they are seeing or feeling is real when it is not.
Mutualism
Two or more organisms living together in a relationship where they all benefit.
Parasitism
An organism living on or in another that serves as a host and harming the host.
Commensalism
Two organisms living together in a relationship where one benefits and the host is neither helped nor harmed.
Phylogenetics
The study of evolutionary relatedness among various groups of organisms.
