Biology Homeostatis And Response Flashcards
What is homeostasis controlling?
Optimal conditions for enzyme action throughout the body as well as all cell functions
Include some example of things homeostasis controlls
Blood glucose concentration
Body temperature
Water levels
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain and the spinal cord is the central nervous system
What organs receive and process info from receptors in the body?
The brain, spinal cord, pancreas
What do effectors do?
Bring about responses which restore optimum levels e.g body temp blood glucose. Effectors include muscles and glands and so responses can include muscle contractions or hormone release.
Which cells detect stimuli (changes in the environment) ?
Cells called receptors
What are nerve cells called and what do they do?
They are called neutrons and are adapted to carry elecrical impulses from one place to another
In Which order does information flow from receptors to effectors in the CNS?
Stimulus->receptor->coordinator—
>effector—> response
What are receptors?
Groups of specialised cells that detect changes in the environment
What is a reflex action
An automatic and rapid response to a stimulus an unconscious response
What is the nerve pathway followed by a reflex action?
Stimulus
Receptor
Sensory neurone
Relay neurone
Motor neurone
Effector
Response
What is the small gap between two neurones called?
A synapse is the gap when two neurones meet
What happens across the synapse?
1 Electrical impulse travels along first axon
This trigger nerve ending of neurone to release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters
These chemicals then diffuse accros synapse binds with receptor molecule causes the second neurone to transit electric impulse
