Biology-Heart Flashcards
What dies circulatory mean?
It means somthing that goes round in a circle or loop
Whatbis circulated around the body with our blood?
•Nutrients
•Oxygen
•Hormones
In which organ does the oxygen go into the blood?
The lungs
Why are there two loops in the circulatory system?
One loop is dedicated to transporting oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart and deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. And the other is dedicated to transporting oxygen around the body to its cells.
What does the pulmonary circulation loop do?
It goes to and from the heart and visits the lungs to oxygenate the blood and transfer the carbon dioxide out of the blood.
What the the systemic circulation loop do?
It goes to and from the heart but travels all around the body to transfer oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the body’s respiring cells. It collects carbon dioxide from the cells.
What waste product is removed through the lungs?
Carbon dioxide
How long does it take for one red blood cell to go round the body?
20 seconds
What are the blood cells compared to?
Delivery drivers and waste disposers
Why is the heart so important?
Without the heart no blood would get anywhere around the body.
What are the names of the four chambers of the heart?
The right atrium
The left atrium
The right ventricle
The left ventricle
What is the heart?
A muscle
What is the heart protected by?
The ribs
What does the heart act like?
A pump
The do the muscles in the walls of the heart do?
Regularly contract
What are the four parts of the blood
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Plasma
Platelets
What does the blood do
Transports substances around the body
Protects us from diseases
Regulation-keeps conditions right for the workings of our cells
What do red blood cells do
They carry oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide from the body to the lungs
What is the job of the white blood cells
They protect our bodies from diseases
Phagocytes (WBC’s) destroy microbes by eating them
Antibodies help the Phagocytes destroy the microbes
Why do blood vessels look blue
Red light is absorbed into a vein but blue light reflects back before it reaches the vein
What do arteries do/have
They carry oxygenated blood from the heart
The lumen is small
The walls are thick
The blood flows fast with high pressure
What is plasma
Plasma is the liquid that makes up more than half of the blood in a human body. And it carries red blood cells white blood cells platelets and antibodies around the body.
What do the veins do/have
They carry blood to the heart
They have a large lumen
Their walls are thin and less elastic
The blood flows slow with low pressure
What do the capillaries do/have
They connect the artery’s and veins
They have a very small lumen
They have very thin walls that are one cell thick
The blood flow is very slow and very low pressure
