Q

Why is it advantageous for scientists to test only one variable at a time?

A

Testing each variable at once can make it clear which variable is responsible for the result.

Q

Describe the placebo effect and give an example-

A

The placebo effect is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs when a sham medical intervention causes improvement in a patient’s condition because of the factors associated with the patient’s perception of the intervention

16
Q

What is a Dichotomous key?

A

A dichotomous key is a scientific tool used to identify organisms or objects by making a series of choices based on their characteristics

17
Q

What is Binomial nomenclature?

A

the system of nomenclature in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism, the first one indicating the genus and the second the specific epithet

18
Q

What is a Taxon?

A

a taxonomic group of any rank, such as a species, family, or class.

19
Q

What is Taxonomic?

A

concerned with the classification of things, especially organisms.

20
Q

What is the largest taxon?

A

The kingdom/Domain

21
Q

What is the smallest taxon?

A

A species

22
Q

What are the 3 main points to the cell theroy?

A
  1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells
  2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms
  3. All cells came from preexisting cells
23
Q

What are enzymes?

A

Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions

24
Q

What are Reactants?

A

The substances that CHANGE (Goes INTO the process)

25
Q

What are Products?

A

The substances that are MADE by a chemical reaction (Comes OUT OF the process)

26
Q

Why is energy important for all living things? What are processes that require energy (cellular and organism level)?

A

Energy is important for all living things. This is mostly because they and us need energy to be able to perform better and grow. The most important process that requires energy is photosynthesis.

27
Q

How do living things obtain energy from their environment?

A

Living things obtain energy from their environment in multiple different ways. As for plants, they get their energy from the sun, but as for humans and animals, we get our energy mostly from food.

28
Q

What does ecology mean?

A

Ecology is the study of the interactions among organisms and their environment

29
Q

What is the difference between abiotic and biotic factors?

A

Abiotic factors are non living things, such as air, water, and the sun. Biotic factors are living things, such as plants and animals.
