Biology- DNA Genes And Chromosomes Flashcards
What is a gene ?
A short section of DNA
What is the purpose of a gene?
Each gene codes for a specific protein by specifying the order in which amino acids must be joined together.
Where are the chromosomes?
The cells nucleus contain chromosomes made from long DNA molecules.
They can be found in pairs in body cells.
What structure are DNA?
Long molecule into a double helix shape
How many bases are there?
4
Adenine , Thymine, Cyrosine , Guanine
How is the structure of protein determined?
By its unique structure
Pros of DNA profiling
-Persue potential interventions, eg mastectomy
- begin planing for a child with special needs
Cons of DNA profiling
- they are comfortable with the results no matter the outcome
-might be data leaks, insurance employment issues
What is a gene?
Gene is a section of dna. Single genes determine inherited features like eye colour
What is an allele?
An allele is a form of gene. The alleles for eye colour could be blue of brown
What’s it called when two alleles are the same?
Homozygous condition
What’s is called when two alleles are different?
This is the heterozygous condition
What a genotype?
The genetic make-up of an individual
What is the phenotype of an individual?
How the genotype shows itself. How it appears
What is the dominant allele
The dominant allele will show itself even if there only one dominant allele present
