Biology Definitions Flashcards
Tissue
Group of cells that function together to perform a specialized task
Cell
Basic unit of life for all living things
Organ
Organized group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to carry out specific duties in the body
Cancer
Cell that divides uncontrollably; develops when a mutation occurs in the cell that affects how the cell divides
Carcinogen
a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue.
Chromosome
Long piece of coiled DNA and proteins; only visible during mitosis
Sister chromatid
One of two identical copies of a chromosome
Field of view
The extent of the visible image field that can be seen.
Cell theory
A scientific theory which describes the properties of cells. These cells are the basic unit of structure in all organisms and also the basic unit of reproduction.
Intracellular digestion
the breakdown of substances within the cytoplasm of a cell
Extracellular digestion
Extracellular digestion is a process in which saprobionts feed by secreting enzymes through the cell membrane onto the food
Physical digestion
breakdown of large pieces of food into smaller pieces which can subsequently be accessed by digestive enzymes
Chemical digestion
enzymes break down food into the small molecules the body can use.
Open circulatory system
Open circulatory systems allow all fluids in an organism to mix
