Biology Chapter 7 Flashcards
Active Transport
Cells are moving molecules from where they are less concentrated to where they are more concentrated
aquapores
This is what water molecules diffuse through- protein-lined channels through cell membranes
concentration gradient
where the concentration of a substance is not the same on both sides
crenated
This is where there is not enough water in the cell and the cell shrivels up
diffusion
Substances move from where they are more concentrated to where they are less concentrated on their own without any help from other substances.
electrical gradient
more positive charge on the outside of a cell than inside
hypertonic (hyperosmotic)
The NA+Cl- concentration is less outside of the cell
hypotonic (hyposmotic)
The Na+Cl- concentration is greater outside of the cell
isotonic (isosmotic)
Where the Na+Cl- concentration is the same on the inside and outside of the cell.
membrane pumps
Membrane pumps pump certain substances in or out of the cell faster than it can diffuse
osmosis
The diffusion of water across a cell membrane
permeable
“cell membranes are selectively permeable, meaning that only certain substances are allowed to pass through them”
physiological saline
This is when the Na+Cl- concentration is the same on the inside and outside of the cell.
random
Unpredictable
solute
The substance that dissolves into a solvent
