Biology - Cells and Respiration Flashcards
What can be found in a plant cell but not in an animal cell?
A cell wall
A vacuole
Chloroplasts
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells which come together.
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues working together.
What is diffusion?
When a substance moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction where energy is released from glucose (sugar). This energy is used for functions to keep you alive such as building proteins and muscle contractions
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic: Glucose and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide and water and this produces energy.
Anaerobic: Respiration without oxygen, produces lactic acid in humans.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ energy)
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose -> Lactic Acid (+ energy)
Which sort of respiration is the most efficient?
Aerobic
Where in the cell does respiration take place?
Mitochondria
What is fermentation?
When anaerobic respiration in yeast produces ethanol - this process can be used to make beer.
