Biology B2 Flashcards
Define respiration.
A series of reactions occurring in all living cells in which glucose is broken down to release energy.
Define glucose.
A simple sugar that is broken down in cells to release energy during respiration. It’s also produced during photosynthesis.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
_______+ __________ -> __________ + __________ + _________
Glucose + Oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is carried in the blood? (3 points) what are they needed for?
Glucose and oxygen - needed for respiration
Carbon dioxide - the waste must be carried away from respiring cells
What happens in diffusion?
Diffusion occurs when particles of a substance spread out, moving from an area where they are lower in concentration. The particles diffuse down a concentration gradient. Glucose, oxygen and carbon dioxide which all move between respiring cells & capillaries (tiny blood vessels).
Define aerobic respiration.
Respiration that needs oxygen.
