Biology B1.P1 Flashcards
Where is the heart located in the body?
The heart is located at the thoracic cavity inbewtween the lungs and behind the sternum.
What is the structure of the heart?
It is surrounded by a fibrous sac made from inelastic connective tissue called pericardium which protects the hard and muscles.
Where are the two atrioventricular valves where are they located?
*On the right side of the heart, deoxygenated blood flows through the (TRICUSPID VALVE).
*On the left side of the heart, oxygenated blood flows through the mitral (BICUSPID / MITRAL VALVE).
Pericardium?
A double membrane which surrounds the heart in order to protect it.
Myocardium?
Its the middle and thickest layer of the heart wall, composed of cardiac muscle; and it helps contract blood to keep moving.
Bundle of his?
A group of specialized muscle fibres in the heart that carry electrical impulses.
Its function is to transmit these impulses from the atrioventricular (AV) node to the ventricles, helping them contract and pump blood.
Sinoatrial node (SAN)?
located in the right atrium, where the electrical impulse starts that initiate each heartbeat.
Atrioventricular node (AVN)
Located at the bottom of septum
Where is receives the electrical impulse from SAN and then delayed for 0.2 sec and then sends the signal to bundle of his.
Semi lunar valves (pulmonary valve)
The pulmonary valve (in the deoxygenated blood)
Controls the flow of blood from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery (which carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs)
Semi lunar valves (aortic valve)
The aortic valve (in the oxygenated blood)
Controls the flow of blood from the left ventricle to the aorta, (which carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body)
