Biology B10 Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining internal conditions in response to internal and external changes in order for cells to function.
What is the stimulus?
The change in the environment.
What is the receptor?
Cells that detect a change in the environment.
What is the effector?
Muscles or glands which act to produce a response.
What is the coordinator?
The brain and spinal cord.
What is the response?
Behaviour caused by the effectors in reaction to the stimulus.
What is the external environment?
The environment outside the organism.
Name the internal conditions.
Water levels
Body temperature
Blood glucose concentration.
What is a reflex response?
“Fast automatic responses that do not involve conscious parts of the brain. They protect the body from harm”
What does the human nervous system do?
Nervous systems enable humans to react to their surroundings and to control
behaviour.
What are neurones?
Specialised cells which carry electrical impulses from receptors to effectors.
Between each neurone there is a gap called a synapse where chemicals are released.
What is the order of the neurones?
Sensory, relay & motor
