Biology Flashcards
Prokaryotic
- no nucleus, DNA floats in the cytoplasm ex. bacteria
Eukaryotic
- membrane bound nucleus
- DNA is in the nucleus (chromosomes) ex. plant and animal cells
5 main cell structures
- cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, organelles
cell wall
protection and support (made of cellulose)
cell membrane
protective barrier (semi-permeable) made of fats - controls what passes into and out of the cell
Proteins
Float in the lipid layer and can be receptors or channels or pumps
nucleus
contains genetic material (DNA), directs cellular activities, selective transport of materials
cytoplasm
contains nutrients needed for cellular activities, has organelles suspended in it
mitochondria
powerhouse of the cell, site of cellular respiration
endoplasmic reticulum ER
tubes from nuclear envelope - transport proteins
Rough ER
contains ribosomes
Smooth ER
Fat/oil production
ribosomes
site of protein synthesis
Golgi apparatus
receives substances from ER and packages them for transport out of cell (modifies molecules and preps them)
Lysosomes
digest foreign bacteria or damaged proteins - contain enzymes (suicide sac)
