Biology Flashcards

1
Q

Cause of action potentials

A

The massive influx of sodium through voltage gated ion channels causes the depolarization of the neuron; action potentials result in increased permeability of the plasma membrane to sodium

Q

How many ATP molecules does glycolysis produce

A

2 ATP per glucose molecule. 3 Na+ molecules are extruded for each ATP utilized by the sodium pump, total of 6 molecules of Na+ are extruded per molecule of glucose

Q

Under normal conditions where is hemoglobin found?

A

In RBC & is not found in the plasma. Plasma hemoglobin is an operational measure of the extent of hemolysis (rupture of RBC)

Q

What kind of action inflates lungs in mammals?

A

Positive pressure pumping action. Because the lung stays in contact with the thoracic wall as it enlarges due to contraction of the diaaphragm & the external intercostal muscles, a presssure that is lower than atmospheric pressure (negative presssure) is generated w/in the alveolar sacs
