Biology Flashcards
Who was Francesco Redi?
A scientist in 1668 that questioned the Theory of Spontaneous Generation. He disproved it using an experiment with meat and flies, sealing off meat and leaving it open to observe whether flies would appear.
What are the 5 characteristics of all living things?
- A need for energy
- Produces waste
- Responds and adapts to the environment
- Reproduces
- Grows
Define Biology
The science of life and all living organisms
What was Louis Pateur’s hypothesis?
He believed that there were micro-organisms in the air. To prove this, he created an experiment in which bacteria growth was tracked between two samples in different containers.
What is The Theory of Biogenesis?
Suggested by Rudolf Virchow in 1858, the idea was that living organisms can only arise from other living organisms.
What three things does the Cell Theory state?
- All organisms are made of one or more cells
- The cell is the smallest functional unit of life
- All cells are produced from other cells
What does TEM stand for?
Transmission electron microscope
What is the difference between a TEM and SEM microscope?
A TEM microscope passes electrons through a specimen to create a 2D image, where as a SEM microscope scans the surface to create a 3D image.
What does SEM stand for?
Scanning electron microscope
What are two ways to view cells?
- Staining: applying a dye to cells to make them more visible.
- Centrifuge: spins a sample to separate cells of different sizes and densities.
How do you calculate magnification?
Multiply the ocular power (x10) by the objective power
The Theory of Spontaneous Generation was proposed by who?
Aristotle in about 350 B.C
