Biology 2.1.7: Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
how are prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells similar?
they both have: a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, DNA + RNA
how are prokaryotic cells different from eukaryotic cells?
they; are smaller, no nucleus, no membrane bound organelles, wall is made of peptidoglycan, have naked DNA the floats free as a loop
what are some other features of a prokaryotic cells?
protective waxy capsule surrounding their cell wall, small loops of DNA (plasmids), flagella, pili
what is flagella?
long whip-like projections which enable them to move
what is pili?
small hair-like projections that enable bacteria to adhere to host cells
how do prokaryotic cells divide?
through binary fission due to not having linear chromosomes
