Biology 2 Topic 3 Flashcards
Give one reason why the fossil record is incomplete
Very few dead plants or animals actually turn into fossils
What is wet mass?
This is the mass including all the water in organism’s body
Give one difference between growth in animals and growth in plants
Animals grow when they are young and stop at full growth whereas plants grow all the time
What are growth charts used for?
They are used to check that babies and children are growing normally
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
Why does the left ventricle have a thicker wall the the right ventricle?
It has more muscle because it needs to pump blood around the whole body, not just to the lungs
Why does the heart have valves?
To prevent the back flow of blood
What do you call the stuff in red blood cells that carries oxygen?
Haemoglobin
List two things that white blood cells produce
They produce antibodies and antitoxins
Name three substances that get carried around the body in plasma
Red and white blood cells and platelets
Why do arteries have strong, elastic walls?
Because the heart pumps blood at high pressure
Why do capillaries have really thin walls?
So that substances can diffuse in and out quickly
Muscles contract to squeeze food along the gut. What is this squeezing action called?
Peristalsis
What do carbohydrates do?
They digest starch to sugars
What is a fossil?
A fossil is any trace of an animal or plant that lived long ago
