Biology 2 Topic 1 Flashcards
What three things do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
Cell wall, large vacuole and chloroplasts
Name two features of a cell that bacteria have.
They have chromosomal DNA
What shape is a molecule of DNA?
They are the shape of a double helix
Name the four different bases found in DNA.
Adenine(A), Cytosine(C), Guanine(G) & Thymine(T)
Name two scientists who had major roles in discovering the structure of DNA.
Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins worked out that DNA had a helical (spiral) sturcture
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of DNA
Mutations are always harmful? True or False?
False, they can produce a new characteristic that is beneficial to an organnism
Give a definition of a catalyst.
A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction.
In the ‘lock and key mechanism’, is the enzyme the lock or the key?
The lock
If you use iodine solution to test something with starch in it, what colour change will you see?
It will turn blue-black if starch is present
Give one advantage of genetic engineering
It can reduce vitamin A deficiency
Give one reason why some people are concerned about generic engineering
Some people have worries about GM crops, e.g growing crops could affect the number of flowers and insects that live by crops
What is mitosis used for in the human body?
Mitosis is used to make new cells for growth and repair
Name two parts of a cell that both plants and animal cells have.
Nucleus and cell membrane
Strawberry plants form runners which become new plants. Is this an example of sexual or asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction
