Biology Flashcards
What is the cell membrane in the animal and plant cell?
Cell boundary and selects molecules for entry & exit.
What is the nucleus in the animal and plant cell?
Contains most of cell’s genetic information, regulates cell activites.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum (E.R.) in the animal and plant cell?
It acts as an assembly line & transportation system for the cell. Rough E.R. is covered by ribosomes (produces protein), and smooth E.R. have no ribosomes (produces fat).
What is the ribosome in the animal and plant cell?
Can be free floating or on rough E.R., site of protein synthesis.
What is the Golgi body (a.k.a. the Golgi apparatus, Golgi complex) in the animal and plant cell?
Directs membrane constituents (proteins/fats) to their appropriate places in the cell.
What is the Mitochondria/Mitochondrion in the animal and plant cell?
“Powerhouse” of the cell, performs most of the respiratory activity of the cell which results in the production of energy.
What is the vacuole in the animal and plant cell?
“Water vacuole” in plant gives the plant cell structure and stores fluids.
What is the cytoplasm in the animal and plant cell?
Carries on all cell life functions except reproduction.
What is the lysosome in an animal cell?
Digests proteins, nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, and sugars).
What is the centriole in an animal cell?
Helps with cell division.
What is the chloroplast in a plant cell?
Where photosynthesis happens.
What is the cell wall in a plant cell?
It’s made of cellulose and gives the plant cell a supportive structure.
