biology Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains DNA and controls cell activities.
What is the function of mitochondria?
They release energy through respiration.
What is the function of ribosomes?
They make proteins.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
They absorb light for photosynthesis.
What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) have no nucleus; eukaryotic cells (plants & animals) have a nucleus.
What is mitosis?
Cell division that produces two identical daughter cells.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from high to low concentration.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water from high to low water concentration through a membrane.
What is active transport?
The movement of substances against a concentration gradient using energy.
What are the three main types of digestive enzymes?
Amylase (starch → sugars), protease (proteins → amino acids), lipase (fats → fatty acids & glycerol).
What does bile do?
Neutralizes stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
What is the function of the small intestine?
Absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream.
How does the heart pump blood?
The right side pumps blood to the lungs, the left side pumps it around the body.
What do arteries do?
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.
What do veins do?
Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart.
What do capillaries do?
Allow exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste.
What are pathogens?
Microorganisms that cause disease.
What are the four main types of pathogens?
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists.
How do white blood cells protect the body?
They engulf pathogens, produce antibodies, and create antitoxins.
How do vaccines work?
Introduce weakened pathogens to stimulate antibody production.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy.
What is anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose → Lactic acid + Energy (without oxygen).
Why do muscles get tired during exercise?
Lactic acid builds up, causing fatigue.
