Biology Flashcards
What are the functions of cell division?
Reproduction, growth, repair, replacement.
Function of the Golgi apparatus?
Post office. It sends stuff, wraps it up/modifies it, and out it goes.
Where is the Golgi apparatus located?
In the cytoplasm, next to the endoplasmic reticulum, and near the cell nucleus.
Function of the mitochondrion (plural mitochondria)?
Act as site of cellular respiration and energy production.
Where is the mitochondrion located?
In the cytoplasm.
Function of the cytoplasm?
Provides an organized watery environment in which life functions take place by means of organelles contained in it.
Where is the cytoplasm located?
Inside the cell but outside of the nucleus.
Function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Protein processing.
Where is the endoplasmic reticulum located?
On the nuclear membrane and extended throughout the cytoplasm.
Functions of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Fats/lipids and hormone processing.
Functions of centrioles?
Make spindle fibres in animal cells to grab chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis.
Where are centrioles located?
In the nucleus of a cell.
Functions of cell membrane?
Barriers and gatekeeper. Controls transport of material into and out of cell.
Where is the cell membrane located?
The outside of the cell for animal cells and between the cytoplasm and cell wall for plant cells.
Functions of ribosomes?
Synthesize proteins in accordance with the chains of amino acids
