Biology Flashcards
What is double circulation?
Blood passing through the heart twice
What path does double circulation take?
De oxygenated blood : body -> heart -> lungs Oxygenated blood: Lungs->Heart->Body
Name the 4 sections of the heart
Left atrium , right atrium , left ventricle , right ventricle
What is inside blood and what are their functions
Red blood cell - carry oxygen , white blood cell - fight disease, platelets- clot blood at wound , plasma - transport food + waste
What happens when someone has CHD
The coronary arteries are blocked with chooestrol
Describe an artery
Blood flows away from the heart, narrow space in the middle , thick muscle wall, blood flows under high pressure, delivers blood to tissues and organs
Describe a vein
Blood flow to the heart, wide space in the middle, thin muscle wall, contains valves for correct blood flow, blood flows under low pressure
Describe a capillary
Microscopic vessel , runs through tissues + organs , 1 cell thick + leaky, blood plasma can escape and reach cells.
What is the equation for respiration
Sugar+ Oxygen -> water + co2 + energy
What pathway does air take when we breathe in
Nose -> trachea -> bronchus -> bronchioles -> alveoli
What happens when you breathe in
Ribs go up and out , diaphragm contracts and flattens, intercostal muscle contracts and the volume of air in lungs increases
What happens when you breathe out
Ribs go down and in , diaphragm is in a dome shape and relaxes, intercostal muscle relaxes and the volume of air in lungs decreases.
