Acids and Alkali Flashcards
3 properties of an acid
acids have a sour taste, acids can be corrosive, and acids can react with alkalis
3 properties of an alkali
alkalis can be corrosive, alkalis feel ‘soapy’, and alkalis neutralise acids
common acids
citric acid, ethanoic acid, carbonic acid , ascorbic acid, sulfuric acid , hydrochloric acid
common alkalis
calcium hydroxide, ammonia , magnesium hydroxide , sodium hydroxide.
PH Scale
0-4 is a strong acid, 5-6 is a weak acid, 7 is neutral, 8-10 is a weak alkali,12-14 is a strong alkali
PH Scale colours
1 is red , 3 is orange, 6 is yellow , 10 is blue , 13 is purple.
what is a universal indicator used for
to see if an acid or alkali is weak or strong , it is also used to identify neutral substances
universal indicator method
- place a small amount of solution into a test tube
- add 1 drop of universal indicator
- note the colour and compare it to the pH chart
- record results
universal indicator conclusion
hydrochloric acid was the strongest acid, it turned red with a ph of 1/2. the weakest acid is vinegar (ethanoic acid) which turned orange/yellow with a ph of 4/6.
sodium hydroxide was the strongest alkali it turned purple with a ph of 12/14. the weakest alkali was baking soda which turned dark green /blue with a ph of 8/9.
