biology Flashcards
reproduction in plants
parts of flower
The male sex cells are
contained in the pollen
grains produced in the
anther.
The female sex cells
(egg cells / ova) are
produced in the ovule,
found in the ovary.
pollination
Pollination occurs when pollen is
transferred from the stamen to the stigma.
self pollination
Self-pollination occurs within the
same plant: this could happen on its own, or with the aid of insects.
cross pollination
Cross-pollination occurs between different plants
of the same species: this requires the pollen to
be blown by wind or transferred by insects.
fertilisation
A tube grows out of the pollen grain
and grows down the style.
The pollen nucleus then moves down the tube.
The pollen nucleus fuses with the egg
cell – this is called fertilisation.
The ovule becomes a seed and the
ovary becomes a fruit.
what are the two types of seed dispersal
Wind dispersal is common for
smaller, lighter seeds, which
can be blown across a large area.
Water dispersal is used when plants
grow near water – seeds can be
carried far away by rivers and
streams.
germination
Germination is the process in which a plant emerges from a seed and begins growing.
asexual reproduction in plants
The plant sends runners across the ground, which sprout roots at various intervals, where new
plants grow. Once the plants are
established, the runners die and rot away.
