Biology Flashcards
How long can a period last?
Periods can last between three to seven days.
What is the cervix?
The neck of the uterus.
What are gametes?
Gametes are special sex cells needed for sexual reproduction.
What is the function of the leaves?
Leaves use light energy, carbon dioxide and water to make food by photosynthesis.
What is the stamen and which part of the flower does it include?
The stamen is the male sex organs which include the anther and filament.
What is the bag called where the testes hang outside the body?
Scrotum.
Where is sperm made?
In the testes.
What are the new cells formed by mitosis called?
Clones.
What happens after the ovule develops into a seed?
The seed begins to grow and the petals and stamen of the flower fall away. The ovary is left and this swells to form the fruit as the seeds grow.
Why are the testes not inside the body?
Because body temperature is too high for sperm production.
Describe water dispersal.
Water dispersal is when plants that grow near the water are carried by the currents of the water.
What is the carpel and which parts of the flower does it include?
The carpel is the female sex organs which include the stigma, style and ovaries.
When does the pollen tube grow?
When a pollen grain lands on the ripe stigma, it grows a long pollen tube down through the style to the ovary.
Where does the sperm duct carry the sperm?
The sperm duct carries sperm from the testes to the urethra.
What is the embryo?
The embryo is the part of the seed that contains a plumule which grows into the shoot and the radicle which becomes the root.
How are the ovaries connected to the uterus?
By tubes called oviducts.
Where is the ova made?
The two ovaries.
Where do the oviducts carry the ovum from the ovary?
Uterus.
What are the 4 main parts of the plant?
The 4 main parts of a plant are the flower, stem, leaves and roots.
During fertilization each sex cell has a nucleus containing 23 chromosomes.
.
What is the function of the roots?
The roots anchor the plant to the ground and absorb water and minerals.
What are the 2 ways a plant can grow from?
Plants can grow from:
- Seeds by sexual reproduction.
- Producing things such as bulbs or tubers by asexual reproduction.
What is the food store?
The food store is the part of the seed that contains cells packed with starch or oil. The food store may be part of the embryo.
What are the four ways that seeds can be dispersed?
- Wind dispersal
- Animal dispersal
- Water dispersal
- Self-dispersal
What is the function of the filaments?
The function of the filaments is that it holds the anthers which contain the pollen grains.
The seed has two parts. What are they?
Embryo and food store.
What is the function of the ovules?
The function of the ovules is to keep the female sex cells inside them.
What is the releasing of an ovum called?
Ovulation.
What is the function of the flower?
The flower contains the reproductive organs.
What is the function of the ovaries?
The function of the ovaries is to keep the ovules in place.
Describe self-dispersal.
This happens when the fruit walls of some plants dry out and burst. The split ovary scatters all its seeds explosively.
What are the two ways that new cells can be made?
Mitosis and meiosis.
A girl who has reached puberty releases an ovum. How often?
Every 28 days.
What is the function of the food store?
The function of the food store is to provide the seed with nutrients for growth until the seedling photosynthesises and can make its own food. It also provides food for many animals.
