BIOLOGY Flashcards
What is the difference between somatic and germline cells?
Somatic cells; CANNOT be inherited
Germline cells: can be INHERITED
What is signal sequence?
Portion of the mRNA is located in the 5′ region and will signal to the ribosome that translation needs to be continued in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
What is nuclear localization signal?
sequence that tags the protein for it to be transported into the nucleus.
What is Na+/K+ ATPASE used for ?
Na+/K+ ATPASE is used for restoring and maintaining RESTING POTENTIAL (three sodium Out and 2 K+ into cell)
What occurs during hyperpolarization?
Hyperpolarization of the cell membrane occurs when K+ channels open and Na+ channels close. This process is independent of the Na+/K+ ATPase
What occurs during Depolarization?
Membrane depolarization is due to the opening of Na+ channels, a process that is independent from the Na+/K+ ATPase.
What stimulates an action potential ?
release of a neurotransmitter that binds to ligand gated channels
How do hydrophobic molecules pass through membrane?
SIMPLE DIFFUSION
What happens as a result of ATP Hydrolysis ?
ATP hydrolysis produces ADP and inorganic phosphate.
What are lipid rafts?
How does the initial filtration step occurr in the glomerulus?
by passive flow due to pressure difference
How do enzymes affect reaction rate?
- colocalize substrates
-alter local pH - change substrate shape
Which phase of cell cycle has NO Division ?
INTERPHASE
