Biology Flashcards
What is an electron microscope
The electron microscope uses a beam of electrons and there wave like characteristics to magnify an objects image
What is meant by an instruments resolution
Resolution is the shortest distance between two points on a specimin that can still be seen as two different points by the observer
Why can some cell structures be seen with an electron microscope but not a light microscope
electrons have a much shorter wavelength than visible light, this allows electron microscopes to produce higher resolution images than standard light microscopes
How do you calculate total magnification using a formula
Multiply the objective lens power X ocular lens power
How do you calculate size using magnifications
Magnification = Image size / actual size
Actual size = Image size / magnification
what is SI
System of units
milli = a factor of one thousandth
micro = a factor of one millionth
nano = billionth
pico = trillionth
Identify the parts of plant and animal cells

What are eukaryotic cells
They are organisms whose cells contain a nucleus. They contain a clearly defined nucleus
How are sperm cells adapted to their function
Stream lined body to move quickly
Acrosome on the head helps to penetrate the ovum during fertilization
Tail allows it to swim towards the egg
Large number of mitrochondria are present for energy
How are egg cells adapted to their function
The presence of cytoplasm which increases its surface area to make it easier in the development in the embryo
They have a protective jelly coat which hardens after fertilization
Have are ciliated epithelial adapted to their function
They are found along the lining of the airways to move substances in one direction
what are the common parts of bacteria
Cell wall cell membrane chromosomal DNA and plasmid DNA
