biology Flashcards
what is a decomposer in a food chain
decomposers are bacteria and fungi which break down dead organisms in a process called decomposition or rotting
what do the arrows show in a food chain/ web
they show the way of energy and nutrients flow ex: grass and sheep the arrow would go from the grass to the the sheep because the sheep gets the energy.
what is bioaccumulation
the build of poisons/ toxins along the food chain
what are pesticides
they are chemicals that kill pests
what is biological control
the control of a pest by the introduction of a natural enemy or predator
what is mono culture
where only one type of crop is grown
why is monoculture bad
it increases disease and pest outbreaks because they lack plants and animals to limit the spread of disease and kill the pests
what are some adaptations of predators
big teeth strong jaw forward eyes sharp claws small ears and good vision
what are the adaptations of prey
big ears camouflaged eyes at the side fast and usually herbivore
what is biodiversity
the variety of living species in an ecosystem
why is biodiversity essential
without it we cannot have a healthy ecosystems to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat.
what does a quadrat show
it shows plant biodiversity in a square
what are the natural causes for extinction
climate change
competition from other animals
reduced food
what are animals hunted for
food fur feathers bone hide
name some other causes of extinction
habitat loss and pollution
