biology Flashcards
reasons why a species may be endangered? (any species - not specific)
- Fatal diseases
- Introduction to new predators
- Pollution
- Habitat loss/destruction of their habitat
- Over exploitation (hunting, overfishing)
- Climate Change
explain why conserving lizards is important
Lizards are predators so they control their prey population
they themselves are a food source
they are indicators for the health of the environment
and they help us by eating dangerous insects that carry fatal diseases
Three features of myriapods that could be used to make a dichotomous key to distinguish between the four species
Number of legs
size of antennas
size of body
state the part of the cell that contains most of the DNA
Nucleus
Suggest how DNA barcoding might be useful in the conservation of animals, such as myriapods.
- efficiently recognize known species and not mistake one species for another
- Successful categorization can help lead conservation efforts
State the function of DNA in cells
DNA = Instructions needed for making larger molecules, called proteins
instructions are stored in each cell
State the group of animals that includes crustaceans, insects, arachnids and myriapods
Arthropods.
Full scientific name is Phylum Arthropoda
Please go to page 12 in your revision guide.
Use Fig. 1.1 and Fig. 1.2 to state one visible feature of each species of crab A, B, C and D, that could be used to make a dichotomous key to identify crabs
- Antennas
- Position of eyes
- Body shape
- Size of arms & back legs
State one features of crabs that shows continuous variation (page 12)
Size of torso
Describe how you would measure variation
Tally chart of all different body shapes and sizes
Crabs produce huge numbers of offspring, but their population remain fairly constant from year to year.
Explain why.
Some offspring are naturally selected
People catch them for food
Predators
suggest the benefits of using bandages made from chitosan
decrease time required to clot blood - accelerates the wound healing process
protection of the skin from microbes
antibacterial properties
What is the genus name and what does it indicate if two animals/insects have the same genus name?
Genus Name is the biological classification ranking between family and species
so if two animals/insects have the same genus name it means that they share a common ancestor
explain why animals/insects having a similar appearance to another animal/insect is an advantage to them
Similar appearance can help them avoid predators as the predators mistake them
how can species gain characteristics through evolution?
- Natural selection
- Variation in offspring
- successful survival means breeding and feeding
- a response to the environment
- camouflage from natural predators
