Q

how do osteoclasts resorb bone?

A

by producing acid to remove the mineral and producing proteolytic enzymes to digest the matrix

Q

how does oestrogen affect bone growth?

A

oestrogen inhibits ostetoclasts - menopause causes a decrease in oestrogen

Q

what are the 3 stages of fracture healing?

A
  1. Bleeding, bruising inflammatory cells turn up and macrophages remove granulation tissue laid down. fibrous tissue is made which needs to be vascularised.
  2. the osteoblasts produce. soft callus which is then mineralised to form woven bone - not strong and disorganised
  3. woven bone is remodelled into lamellar bone, which is the cortical bone and is very strong.
17
Q

how long do bone fractures normally take to heal?

A

about 4 months
