Q

how to draw the structure of two bonded glucose molecules together in a condensation reaction

A

look at the OH on one and the OH on the other
take away H2O from them two so you are just left with an O between
so just draw the O in the middle and have the two molecules bonded to the O with lines

ignore the two H above or bellow the OH you are only focussed on the two OH’s

Q

basic structure of a fatty acid

A

Just a central C
with a variable Rgroup (hydrocarbon chain) on one side
and the Hdroxyl (COOH) with a double bond C=O
with the central carbon so OOH is just bonded to the central carbon
on the other side

Q

how do the strcuture of an amino acid and fatty acid change in regards to their hydroxyl group COOH

A

the fatty acid uses its central carbon in the COOH whereas
in the amino acid the central carbon bonds to another C which is the C involved in COOH

Q

structure of an amino acid

A

central carbon
variable R group bonded top
H bonded bottom
H2N single bonded left (amine group)
Bonded to a C on the right which this C then forms COOH
unlike fatty acid which uses the central c in COOH

Q

the structure of how amino acids join together and a polypeptide is formed

A

it is condensation so H2O is removed

pick the opposite OH and H bonds
remove H2O
in this case you are left with nothing
so you just connect the two molecules by bonding across the middle (the C to the N)
leave the top bonds alone

Q

general way to show the structure of bonds being ,made from a condensation reaction

A

pick the two bonds opposite each other which have H2O between them (leave the other two bonds above or bellow alone)
remove the H20 from them usually HO from one side and H from the other
whatever you are left with you just put it in the middle and bond each molecule to it
if nothing is left then just bond across

there are two opposite pairs of bonds at the beginning
look at which pair you can take H2O from and do that
the other pair which you did not choose you completely leave alone and just write them normally
