Biological molecules Flashcards
1
Q
What is transcription?
A
- The process where the information from a strand in DNA is copied into a new mRNA
- The mRNA is built up by complementary base pairing and it uses DNQA as a template
- The process of transcribing the DNA code into another code such as mRNA
2
Q
What is the primary structure of a protein?
A
- A sequence of amino acids
3
Q
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
A
- Hydrogen bonds are formed and the polypeptide chain gets twisted to a alpha helix or a beta pleated sheet
4
Q
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
A
- This is where the helix is twisted and folded to give a compact and complex 3D structure
- Contains ionic bonds, disulphide bonds and hydrogen bonds
5
Q
What is the quaternary structure of a protein?
A
- Multiple polypeptide chains join together
6
Q
How does VEGF replicate?
A
- Helicase unwinds the DNA which breaks the hydrogen bonds
- RNA polymerase attaches to the unwinded strand of DNA
- RNA nucleotide are added
- Complementary base pairs are added
7
Q
What is the difference between DNA and RNA?
A
- DNA is double stranded
- RNA is single stranded
- DNA has bases A,T,C,G
- RNA has bases A,U,C,G
