Biological diversity - Topic 3 Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA= Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Blueprint, specific cells know where to go, organisms made in an specific way.
All living cells contain DNA, normally located in nucleus of cell
How DNA discovered?
Canadian scientist Oswald Avery suggested that a Large molecule in the nucleus of cells store blueprint (aka DNA)
Cells with no nucleus, where DNA?
Have DNA floating in cytoplasm
DNA Structure
James Watson and Franco Crick are credited with figuring out the double helical (aka double helix) nature of DNA
DNA structure- Double helix component
Combination of four difference chemicals knows as nucleotides
Nucleotides
3 parts: deoxyribose (sugar), phosphate group, and nitrogen base
Nitrogen base - 4 types
Guanine (G)
Cytosine (C)
Adenine (A)
Thiamine (T)
Form pairs in the nucleotide to create helix
Pairs
G & C
A & T
Chromosomes
DNA contains instructions for all organism’s charact pop as
