Biological Diversity Topic 1-4 Flashcards
What is a behavioural adaptations?
How an animal acts
What’s a niche?
Series of roles an organism plays in tis environment
What’s a variation?
Differences in characteristics of organisms caused by genetic and environmental factors
What’s a producer?
Organism which grow using energy from the sun
What’s a consumer?
Eat other organism for nutrients
What’s a herbivore?
Eats producers (plants)
What’s an omnivores?
Eats consumers and producers (plants and other organism)
What’s a carnivore?
Eats other consumers
What’s a decomposers?
Breaks down dead organism and release nutrients
What’s a scavenger?
An animal who feeds on dead plant materials
What’s a speciation?
When a species got separated and form new species
What’s biology?
The study of living things
What’s diversity?
Differences of adaptations of living things
What’s a generalist?
Organism with generalized requirements and adaptations that allow it to survive in variable conditions and food source
What’s a specialist?
Type of organism that is adopted to a very specific environments
What are the advantages of a broad niche?
- eat all kinds of food
- adapt and live in different habitats or environment
What are the disadvantages of a broad niche?
More competitions of food
What are the advantages of a narrow niche?
Less competition
What are the disadvantages of a narrow niche?
- can die easily
- only one type of food source
- lived in a specific environment
How do you measure biological diversity?
We can use diversity index
Natural selection
- not all offspring survive
- many variations within a species
- variations increase the chances of an organism surviving to reproduce
- variations are passed on and lead to changes in the genetic characteristics of a species
- nature determines which animals and plants will be able to reproduce and spread their characteristics
Artificial selection
- used to increase a single trait or combine two or more traits
- also called selective breeding
- involves picking the animals with the traits that you want and breeding them with another, the offspring will have the parents traits
What is a structural adaptations?
Physical features that helps an organism to survive in its environment
