Biological Diversity Flashcards
Biotic Factor
A living factor is any living component that effects another orgnism
Ecosystem
An environment where living and no living things interact
Abiotic Factor
In Ecology and Biology, abiotic components are non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment
Population
A group of individuals from the same species living in the same area
Community
A group of populations from different species living in the same area
Niche
The role of an organism or species in an ecosystem, including where it lives, what it eats, how it reproduces and how it interacts with abiotic and biotic things.
Resource Paritioning
Division of a resource between two or more coexisting species such that the niche differs slightly in each
Interspecies Competition
Two or more species using the same limited species
Intraspecies Competition
Competition between the same species
Variation
A modification in behaviour or structure or an organism deviating from organisms from the same species or group
Carnivore
A living organism which only eats meat
Herbivore
An organism that only eats plants
Omnivoire
A living organism that eats both plants and meat
Adaptation
The process of changing to the environment
Evolution
The process in which different kinds of living organisms have developed and diversified.
Comensalism
The relationship between two species in which one has benefited and the other is not benefited or harmed
Mutualism
A relationship between two species where both benefit
Parasitism
The relationship between two species where one is hard and the other benefits
Montane
Level below the treeline on a mountain
Sub-alpine
The area in and around the tree line on a mountain
Alpine
The area above the tree line on a mountain
Species
A group of one kind of organism
What are the levels of reducing biodiversity?
Special Concern Threatened Endangered Extricated Extinct
What are causes of reducing biodiversity?
Forestry Human Expansion Over Hunting Over Specialization Introducing Species Global Warming
How do you preserve biodiversity?
Conservation
What are examples of biological indicator or keystone species? Amphibians?
Grizzly Bears
Frogs
Heritable
Characteristics that are inherited from your parents. hair/ eye colour, height
Non-Heritable
Characteristics that are learned or acquired from the environment
What is the levels of the Linnaean system?
Kingom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
In the Linnaean system, which name (s) are italicized and not capitalized?
Genus and Species
Species
Homo sapien (italicized)
Who was Charles Darwin? What did he discover?
A scientist who discovered the concept of Evolution. He studdied the Galapagos island finches and how the beak shape changed on each island depending on the food available.
Sexual Reproduction
Reproducing an offspring in which genetic information is exchange and the offspring are genetically different than the parents
Asexual Reproduction
Reproduction only involving one parent to create a clone of the parent
What are the parts of a flower?
Petal Stamen: Antler Filament Sepal Stem Carpel/ Pistol: Stigma Style Ovary Ovule
What are the different types of Asexual reproduction?
Budding
Binary Fission
Spore Production
Vegetative reproduction
Discreet Variation
Obvious differenced between two beings, you can have blue eyes or not
Continuos Variation
Variation that has a range of different forms, the height of men
What is a gamete?
Sex cell (sperm/ egg cell)
What is the role of a gamete?
To join with another in reproduction
Fertiliztion
The union of the sperm and egg cell, Creates a zygote
What is a zygote?
A fertilized egg
What is cleavage?
The first division of a fertilized cell
What is an Embryo?
An undeveloped organism in its beginning stages
When can fertilization occur?
When a sperm cell can penetrate an egg cell.
