Biological Developments Flashcards
The endocrine system
System of glans each of which secretes different types of hormones directly into the bloodstream
Instrumental in regulating mood growth and development tissue function metabolism sexual functions and reproductive processes
Puberty
A biological revolution marked by dramatic changes in the adolescents physiology and physical appearance
Gonadotropins
FSH and LH released in pituitary glad
Occurs when a threshold of body fat is reached
Partly genetically programmed
But, influences by environment (nutrition health and toxins)
Hypothalamus: monitors levels of sex hormones in the body (among other things)
Dips below a set point, produces more gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH)
Shxjdnx
FSH and LH
Development of gametes ( eggs and sperm)
Gonads
Produce sex hormones (estrogen and androgens)
Observable body changes
Growth spurt
Not all parts of the body grow at the same pace
Extremities first
Asynchronicity- in growth explains the gangly look in early adolescence
Primary sex characteristics
Directly related to reproduction
Secondary sex characteristics
Nor directly related to reproductions. But visible indicators of emerging ability to reproduce
Examples of primary sex char.
Production of sperm. Development of eggs.
Dvmt of sex organs
Genotype
A persons inherited genes
Alleles are alternative forms of any given gene
Environment
Social
Physical
Cultural
Passive interaction
Occur in biological families when parents provide both genes and environment. Dominates when we are younger.
Evocative interaction
Occurs when a persons inherited char. Evoke responses from others in their environment
Active interaction
Occur when people seek out envmts that correspond to ter genotype can char. Dominated when we are older.
