biological approach to explaining OCD Flashcards
limitation:often relies on correlational research
E:many studies have found a correlation between OCD and biological abnormalities like low levels of seretonin
E:however this bring about the possibility that correlation does not always equal causation so even if researchers are able to find an association with people who have OCD this does not directly mean that biological features are the cause of it. it is also possible that having OCD might cause lower levels of serotonin).
L:therefore the problems deriving from correlational research weakens the biological explanation of OCD
strength:there is research support for the bio approach genetic expl of OCD
E:e.g. Nestedt reviewed twin studies and found that 68% of identical twins shared OCD whilst only 31% of non identical twins shared it.
E:the relatively high concordance rates for identical twins is evidence supporting part of biological approach(genetic explanation). additionally the results of the concordance rates were not 100% implying that the environment plays a role in causing OCD ,therefore this provides support for the diathesis stress model as OCD involves genetic and environmental components [however, there are criticisms with the identical twin studies regarding its validity. its possible that identical twins are treated more alike than non-identical twins therefore having different environment experiences]
L:therefore there is research support for twin studies but its validity may be undermined .
