Biogeochemical Cycles Flashcards
what chemical transformations do bacteria perform?
- degradation of organic matter
- disease suppression
- disease causation
- nutrient transformation in roots
what do bacteria gain and provide during chemical transformation?
gain nutrients and energy
provide organisms with suitable forms of chemicals
what do fungal decomposers do?
saprophytic fungi convert dead organism material into fungal biomass, co2 and small molecules
what do microalgae do?
convert solar energy and co2 into sugar, proteins for soil structure and nutrient cycling
what are some benefits of algae?
some fix atmospheric nitrogen (anabaena) , some form compounds that promote plant growth
why do crops rely on inorganic sulfur?
for amino acid synthesis, vitamins and cofactors
what do sulfur deficiency lead to?
growth impairment
what does rhizobacteria do to get sulfur?
enzymatically hydrolyses sulphanate and sulfate esters to release inorganic sulfur
