Biofuels and non- renewables Flashcards
What are bio-fuels
They are plants and animal waste
Advantages for bio-fuels
- renewable
- fairly reliable as crops take a short time to grow
Disadvantages for bio-fuels
- they don’t respond to quick immediate demand for energy
- cost to refine bio-fuel as high
- some worry at the rate we need bio-fuels, there won’t be enough space and water to grow food
- forest have been cleared to grow bio-fuels so species lose their habitat
- the burning of vegetation increases CO2 and methane
Advantages for fossil fuels and nuclear energy?
- they respond to quick immediate demand for energy
- cost-effective
Disadvantages for fossil fuels and nuclear energy?
- slowly running out ( non-renewable)
- set- up can cost a lot
What are the disadvantages of burning coal, oil, and gas
releases CO2 which adds to the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming
What does burning coal and oil lead to
releases sulfur dioxide which causes acid rain. This can be reduced by removing the sulfur before the fuel is burned
What is a disadvantage of coal mining
The view can be spoilt by fossil fuel power plants
What is bad about oil spillages
causes serious environmental problems that affect mammals and birds around the sea
What is bad about nuclear power
Carries the risk of the major catastrophe that happened in Japan
