Biofuels Flashcards
Fossil fuels to biofuels
Coal –> biomass pellets
Oil –> bioethanol, biodiesel etc.
Natural gas –> synthetic natural gas
Bioethanol
Made from sugar and starches
Maize: grow in harsh conditions; high carbon needed for fermentation, distillation, dehydration and supply chain; ghg savings; land use changes
Sugar cane: grow in only good conditions; very high ghg savings
Biodiesel
Oils/fats from plants
Transesterification process
Use non food crops
Wood/agricultural waste
Burn directly
Good at small scale; large insfrastructure changes needed for large scale
Particulate pollution
Cellulosic ethanol
Use non edible part of crop
Turn structural carbohydrates into sugars before fermation
High energy and inefficient
